In recent years the video game industry has integrated advanced technologies to develop groundbreaking gameplay to create experiences that blur the line between game and reality. Specifically in racing games, one of the most exciting developments has been the fusion of state-of-the-art graphics and physics engines. The enhancements in these departments not only elevates visual quality to unprecedented levels, but also masterfully replicates the intricacies of real-world driving. Gamers are treated to high-definition visuals, dynamic weather effects, and cars modelled with astonishing detail.
Video game developers have extended their reach to include classic vehicles, allowing players to drive vintage cars that have been brought back to life in the digital world. However, the challenge of digitising these vehicles is no small task given the absence of digital models and the limitations of traditional design and manufacturing techniques.
The Challenge of Digitising Vehicles
The goal was to create a digital counterpart for vintage cars that encapsulates both their beauty and flaws, without compromising on detail or authenticity. The main hurdles included:
Efficient Exterior Scanning Without Damaging Markers: Achieving an accurate full exterior scan swiftly, without using potentially harmful markers.
Interior Scanning in Tight Spaces: Collect 3D data of the small interior of the car, ensuring no details were overlooked.
Scantech's Innovative Solutions
The TrackScan-Sharp was used to collect full surface data of the vehicle’s exterior. With its large scale 49m3 measuring volume accurate 3D data was acquired swiftly without the need to reposition the tracker frequently.
When scanning the vehicle’s interior, the compact SIMSCAN handheld scanner proved invaluable. The lightweight, palm-sized system was able to collect vital 3D data in tight spaces, such as the footwells and the steering wheel. Collecting 3D data in such a close environment is something that traditional 3D scanners can’t achieve.
Scantech’s 3D scanning technologies have played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the physical allure of classic cars and their digital reincarnations in racing games. By overcoming the unique challenges associated with digitising vintage vehicles, these advanced scanning solutions underscore the remarkable strides being made in the video game industry towards creating hyper-realistic and engaging gaming experiences.
